Timing belt changed now noise under load..... 200 1986

I have an '86 sedan with 334K and I usually do everything myself but the timing belt. I've never had the nerve until lately. Well today I spent about
5 hours on the project. All seemed to go well until I went to let it idle and get up normal operating temp. After about 2 minutes, the rpm's increaed a little then nearly died. It did it again and then did die. It started right up but had the same issues. Then I took it out on the road and got up to about 40 mph all the while hearing that rattling sound one hears if too low an octane gas is used. I think it must be the timing off. When I pulled the top cover for the TB my line on the top sprocket didn't line up with the spot on the sprocket itself. Do I just need to have the timing adjusted? Do I need any special tools?
