89 745T - Could the oil dipstick be too short???

We bought a 89 745T a few months ago. It was pushing oil all the time - drips excessively and all that.

I would fill it to the full mark - and in less than 20 miles it would push 1/2 a quart out!!!

I thought I had major problems.

Earlier posts indicated that excessive crankcase pressure build-up may be the culprit.

I pulled the crank case ventilation (firetrap?) and it was not clogged - the hoses had next to no buildup...

So - puzzled I put it back together - not knowing what next...

WHile I was away - my wife was driving it - and I reminded her to check the oil - the first few trips to town she said that it did not use much - and that it was part way b/w add & full marks.

So I said this is interesting and let's not top it up.

As long as we only add enough to about 1/2 way b/w the 2 marks - the use in not excessive.

add to FULL and it pushes oil everywhere.

Common???

Comments??

Thanks in advance.
