240 Engine Temp / Thermostat? HELP! 200 1993

Over this past weekend we were on a road trip and I noticed that the oil temp gauge needle was a 1/4 inch below the halfway mark on the gauge. If I remember right the needle always ran in the halfway range at the little mark on the gauge. About 20 minutes later the "check engine" light came on and stayed on for the remainder of the trip (because we needed to get home). I felt the hoses and they felt cooler than they should for being on the highway.

When i got home I thought the thermostat was stuck in the open position and had gone faulty and replaced it and retopped the antifreeze. I checked the codes on the code sensor and there were none. I disconnected the battery to reset the "check engine" light and it has not come back on....yet. The oil temp gauge is still operating about 1/4th an inch below the half way mark.

Does anyone have any advice? Does anyone else have a temp gauge that runs at that level? Are there any other things I should look at?

Thanks!
