Does anyone have a source, or solution to the old "collapsed mesh fuel sock in the gas tank syndrome"? Fuel flter (cannister type) is new. I seem to have also had this problem in my old '72 1800 ES. Anytime the tank went much below 1/2 full, it would give all the symptoms of fuel starvation (bucking, sputtering, cutting out, etc.). Filling the tank seems to cure this. Of course it means that your effective range and capacity is cut in half!
This is on a '73 145, and I'm going to also eliminate some other potential trouble spots by doing a major tuneup, including replacing the injector seals, the exhaust manifold gasket (suspect a vacuum leak). I keep reminding myself that although this is a 30+ year old car, albeit with less than 90,000 miles, this is the kind of thing that is logical. What's involved in diagnosing and replacing the tank sock, and is this a likely problem to pursue? I haven't seen this part for sale anywhere online. Thanx
