Comatose on the road 700 1988

My 88 740 Turbo passed out on the road last night. I was just topping a hill and didn't notice at first that all the lights had come on and there was no power. Attempts at restarting showed it was not electrical, seems more like fuel not getting to the engine. After about 20 minutes of cooling it almost started - ran for about 30 seconds then just stuttered and went back to sleep. After about 2 hours I went back and it started right up and drove about a mile before repeating. All attempts seemed like it would start, but only ran a few seconds. After 30 minutes, it started right up and ran for about 1/4 mile before another nap. I had it towed home, but have no clue what this might be.

What should I check?
