1997 965/V90 - check engine light vs overfill after oil change...posted as 960 & V90 900 1997 S90-V90 1997

The tech as the shop where I had the oil changed some weeks ago told me "It took more than the five quarts in the jug to bring it up" and he used some from the second 5-quart jug I had provided. (Oil is Mobil-1, 5W-40, I also provided a Mann filter).

The owner's manual sez 5.9 quarts capacity. I assumed that they put in one extra quart. Did not check. The car does a 45-mile RT commute five days a week, sometimes on a 70mph tollway, sometimes not. No reported problems.

Now today comes a long-crank start. Then I notice a strong unusual smell to the exhaust. Also a rattling noise from under, RH side, towards rear.

We drove off, and - bingo - get a "Check Engine" light. Haven't had time to go to AutoZone for a freebie scan for that. Tomorrow AM.

All I did was remove-replace the AMM plug and check the oil. No sign of oxidation on the AMM connector. The oil reads a 1/8 inch above full, engine hot. There is a small oil leak at the rear of the intake cam, which I expect to be a seal on the distributor shaft, and which I also expect to require a small topping up between oil changes.

So I now believe that the tech put in more than the needed one-more-quart beyond the five. Some has leaked but the stick still reads 1/8 inch above full.

I remember a post in the last 2 months or so about it being not good to have the crankcase overfull. But I cannot recall the consequences.

Could there be any connection between too much oil and the CE light? I can't imagine one, but then I'm a 240 guy, morphed from a carbuerated Ford V-8 guy.

Any ideas will be most welcome.

Regards,

Bob
