overdrive electrical problem M46 200

Just put my new treasure on the road, '90 240 wagon. OD unit was completely inop when I got the car, but the dash light stayed on all the time. Replaced relay, solenoid clicked, problem solved? not really. The light goes off when OD is engaged, but the button has to be held down to keep it in, and it seems to engage if the button is held down regardless of what gear it's in. Any ideas?? I was thinking of just putting a lighted rocker switch on the dash...but the car's in pretty nice shape and I'd rather keep it stock.
