1990 240 DL wagon speedometer problems 200

hi all,
changed out my ignition switch and while doing so I removed the front gauge panel which includes the speedometer. It was working just dandy before removal. once I reinstalled it it would bounce or go haywire while I drove. so i took it back out and looked it over. all there really is, is electrical wires that connect to the back of the panel so I just removed them all and reinstalled them. now it doesn't pick anything up. Any clues? all my other gauges seem to work just fine. unfortunately now I have to get the car inspected , and it wont pass with out this gauge working.
