Rear tailgate on 1986 GL Wagon and lighting 200 1986

Good news! You guys telling me all about the wonders of older 240s have convinced me to KEEP the 240 that I recently inherited.

I've been tracking down some electrical issues; specifically, I had noticed that the license plate lights don't work (that's a $217 ticket from our local city police, who are quite over-eager on this sort of thing, unlucky friends have told me!). Also, the rear defogger and high-mounted brake light don't work. FINALLY, I tracked down the reason, and it made my stomach sink!! The wiring bundle that enters the tailgate at its top, on the driver's side, is completely frayed, in fact, 3 of the wires are completely severed! There is absolutely NO ROOM to get in there by the big shiny hinge to try to splice anything. Meanwhile, I am too afraid to drive my Brick by night for fear of a big fat ticket! Any suggestions about how to get to this wiring and fix things up will be highly appreciated!
Thanks
