Moaning Alternator -- Bearings or Brushes? 200

The alternator in my '87 240 has been making noise off and on for a couple of months and things have recently graduated to a "replace me now or be sorry!" state of affairs.

Car has 387,000 miles. Alternator is original. Last brush change was ~5 years ago.

My first thought is that it's the bearings, given the noise and the mileage, and because I figured worn brushes should not make noise. But before I swap the whole unit I thought I'd see if anyone has encountered this kind of noise from brushes.
Has anyone run into this before?

Merci/Gracias/Thanks folks,

DS
