Intermittent starting 200 1986

I have a 1986 240DL. The problem is intermittent starting . Every now and then after driving and letting it sit for as little as 10 minutes it will crank over but not catch. Now what I don't understand is why it will start again after relesing the top vacum hose off the intake manifold. There is a release of air when i do so. This is all well and good that it gets us on the road again but why does this work and how can I fix it???????
Thanks for your help
