Hmm. What does this mean? 140-160 1973

So, I had thought my mechanical fuel pump had bitten the dust yesterday when my 145 wouldn't catch after sitting for the weekend. Couldn't see any gas in the clear in-line filter installed before the pump, so I figured the pump wasn't pulling anything.

After a few tries at starting, I saw gas in there. Likewise, there was gas in the float bowls. So, after a spritz of starting fluid I tried again and she ran. And I drove to work. (Half-inch wrench for the air cleaners and starting fluid in the drivers seat as a precaution.)

What would cause a no-start like this?
