Hand Brake Adjustment, 960 wagon? 900 1997

Hi,
Can anyone tell me where the handbrake adjustment is, on a 1997 960 wagon?
1)I had the center console out today, expecting to see a threaded end on the cable, with an adjusting nut, but there is only a peg holding the cable in place. Did I miss something?
2) Under the car, the cables move at the rear brake assemblies, leading me to believe the cables are intact, but this condition where the handbrake does not grab, did seem to come on rapidly. IS it likely that I have some problem beyond an adjustment?
