unstoppable wipers 120-130

I haven't used my wipers in a while, but I ran into a blizzard on the way to the office this morning.

I turned on the wipers and everything was fine. But when I pushed the switch back in (off), the wipers started going fast speed and travelling so far that they slapped off both sides of the windshield on the chrome trim.

I couldn't get them to stop until I turned the ignition off.

Wasn't able to check much because of the blizzard. But when I go back out to may car this afternoon and sweep off the snow, what should I look for? What causes the wipers to keep going when the switch is off?
