hard to start when engine is hot 200 1978

'78 245DL 200k+

when cold, starts basically fine, cranks for a second, maybe fires on the 6th turn or so. does sound a little bit rougher than i remember, but hard to say.

when hot, after a delay of less than a minute, starts fine, usually.

when hot, after a longer delay, usually will crank and crank but not turn over. however it will finally sputter to life after a signifigant amount of cranking, say 1-2 tries of 15-20 seconds each.

if the engine is allowed to cool, maybe 2-3 hours, it'll start fine again.

what i did based on searches of this forum:
-replaced the fuel pump relay. no effect.
-tried to clean all the electrical connections i could find, by disconnecting and wire brushing with a little wd40. nothin'
-unable to locate a fuel injection fuse, supposedly a 25amp blade fuse somewhere..
-i'm guessing fuel pump check valve, fuel pump at tank, or control pressure regulator (warmup regulator)

what do you all think?
