1987 240 stalls when put in gear. What is going wrong?

Are you asking if we think it is the transmission, linkage or filter? The answer is probably none of them. What has led you to the linkage and filter possibilities. It is unwise to be "messing" with the car until you learn more about it. It is very likely that you will create additional problems.

You do not give enough information to help. Your car has an idle control valve and some other parts that sometimes give trouble. If the idle speed is too slow because of a problem with the idle speed control then the car will easily stall when put into gear. The car should idle at 750rpm (900 with AC on)whether in gear or not.

I assume you have learned to keep it from stalling by giving it a bit of gas, correct?
What is your idle speed?
Does it stall immediatly after shifting or only when you give it the gas to pull away?
Does the car perform normally at speed?
