gearbox cleaning 140-160

I am preparing to put the top back on my m-40 gearbox. I do not plan to replace any gaskets except the cover gasket. I would like to clean out the gearbox with some mineral spirits. Will this cause any damage to my other gaskets or seals. Is it safe to do this I don't want to add misery to my job by screwing anything up. Are there any other concerns I should have doing this? I found that the old gear oil is a bit cloudy so I want to replace it and not put new into a dirty gearbox.
