940(945)GLE transmission query 900 1990

I've just bought a '90 940GLE wagon, automatic with B234F (16-valve) engine. I live in New Zealand, the car is a Japanese import, i.e. it was originally sold new in Japan, so is presumably to Japan spec.

The trans seems to work fine, but changes up much later than autos I have previously experienced. Also, it seems to kick down with quite small throttle openings, then requires the throttle to be almost closed in order to change back up to the higher gear.

I've assumed this is normal behaviour, but can anyone tell me whether this might be symptomatic of a problem? The late change is particularly noticeable between second and third gears. The trans seems otherwise normal, the OD fourth switches in and out no problem, the the lock-up kicks in at about 80 km/h as expected, and the changes are quick.

I checked out the maintenance FAQ, which suggests that a trans flush might be in order, although it suggests that the changes would be slow, rather than late.

I have further questions, but I'll just go for one at a time at the moment!

Thanks,

Ed.
