shop recommend installing NTC kit?? 700 1990

It's a 90 740 turbo wagon - manual - 165k

Took a trip to the sierras this weekend to play in the snow. Drove up to 7000' On the way home my "check engine" light comes on. Took it to shop - they reset it and told me it was a quirk of the car, it could be fixed with an $1800 "NTC kit". Obviously I don't want to spend that kind of money for something like this - are there other ways to resolve this?? It seems like something Volvo would have warranted at some point, although at 16 years old I may be out of luck at this point.
