I just bought a 1990 740 GLE with 148K. Body is rust free, with some small dings in the hood; interior is nearly pristine, with only a few dash cracks and a broken front passenger door map pocket. Only other problems are non-functioning antenna (stuck in raised position) and sunroof will not fully close automatically because wind shroud will not go down (holding it down manually allows roof to fully close). Could not verify timing belt change, but my Volvo mechanic who inspected it feels that the belt was recently changed, as it appears new (writing on belt appeared fresh; no chinks in teeth, etc.) Belt cover looks new; so does the OE radiator. Records only through 30K, but it appears that this car has been maintained. Tires and brakes are almost new. I feel like I got a good car for $1850.
So, other than the regular timing belt change (I will probably change it before I put 50K more on it, just to be sure), what should I look out for? Don't know about PO oil changes, but is it safe to start with synthetic? What other problems start to show up around 150K? My last brick was a '93 944T; this engine looks so different. What are some of the simple maintenance tasks I can do to keep it running well? Thanks for your help.
