Key stuck in ignition V-70 1999

Every now and then the key gets stuck in the ignition and will not be released by the steering wheel lock. I disconnect the key chain and just leave it there because there is no trick to get it out. When it happens the steering wheel also does not lock so that with the car shut off, one can turn the wheel as much as muscles can do. The key itself does not rotate all the way back to the first Roman numeral but stops just shy of it when this happens. It is a laser cut key with a chip imbedded in the rubber grip. The problem appears to be that the locking bolt does not go into the steering which holds up the key being released.
Has anyone ever had this and been able to resolve it or taken apart the housing of the steering wheel mount? Thanks for your time and consideration and stay away from the this model Volvo.
