I have an 87 745 non turbo with Bendix front brakes (one piece rotor and hub). I just replaced the pads and rotors about 1000 miles ago. I used aftermarket pads with shims. The shims keep slipping from the pads and cutting a groove in the rotor. Read below, this is what I found in the FAQ:
Caution: Aftermarket Pad Shims. [Editor] Several anecdotes have been received about Beck Arnley pad shims, which can come loose and score a groove in the rotor which may lead to rotor and wheel failure. If you use stick-on shims, make absolutely certain the pad backs are clean of grease before installing the shims: spray them first with brake cleaner. Loose shims need to be carefully installed in the calipers before finishing the job so they cannot migrate loose. Consider using paste or grease instead of a shim or stay with the Volvo OEM version
I have also noticed another issue with the right front caliper after working on the brakes. Note: the guide pins have been cleaned and lubed and slide well. The right front caliper(pads) is not making even contact with the rotor. I have noticed that the inner edge of the rotor is rusty after car washes, I am sure the pads are not contacting this part of the rotor. I raised the caliper and re-aligned the stupid shims. Now the outside edge of the rotor is rusty (no contact by caliper). I am wondering if I can ditch the damn shims?! Anybody have any better suggestion other than the stick on shims that keep falling off. I have no brake noise, I would love to ditch the shims if I can. Thanks in advance for the input!
