Safe Life of Seatbelts? 700

I am putting my '88 740 back on the road after a year long hiatus, and among the little things still not quite working right are the seat belts which are very stiff and not retracting well. In the past I've lubed and cleaned the belts, but I am wondering whether after 18 years they may be past their safe life. Any opinions on this? Does Volvo have a recommended replacement interval? I suspect from the dealer they will cost a small fortune. Do the belts from later 740s and 940s fit in my car?

Just trying to stay safe!

james
