Paradise by the dashboard light

Does the intensity of the battery charge light indicate the severity of the problem? In other words, my new aquisition, a 90 240 GL had a barely noticable glow and resulted in a tow job off the highway. For the first time in my brick history I'm having work done by a mechanic and they are leaning to a new alt. Something tells me regulator. So would a bad regulator be resposible for a very dim warning light?
