Steering problems 700 1987

I have a '87 740GLE, when I first got it 1 1/2 years ago the steering was OK to the left but the first turn of the steering wheel to the right was hard then got easier. I also noticed the fluid was silver metalic colored and thick. Any ideas? Rack going bad? (worn parts causing fluid to be silver)
