Transmission/ Fuel Pump

I have a 1986 740 GL (no turbo) automatic, with about 205,000 miles. The car is in excellent condition, but lately I have been having problems when switching gears. The first few times I accelerate, the car tugs along on each gear. Once I have been driving the car for awhile the problem seems to go away. I have noticed that the "tugging" is worse when I let the car idle for awhile before accelerating (i.e at a traffic stop). I also noticed that the last time I filled up with gas that the indicator needle for the gas went crazy, going back and forth for a minute or so before returning to the normal spot. It also seems that my gas mileage has been getting worse.

I am a college student and dont have a ton of money to invest on fixing my car.
What sounds like the most logical problem to my car, and should I be worried that it may cost me alot of money to fix.

Thank- You

Jon
