Accessories!.. Yeah - some love them, some dont care much about them! - For many who has restored their 122S (or other classic Volvo) into near perfect condition, it becomes a new obsession to find original accessories (and with todays means of 'getting' arround the Globe visiting virtually marked places online etc.) - it has although become a bit easier to find more than 'just' some accessories.
I don't mean to offend you, but to correct a bit: The overrider bar was a standard bumper-thing for the US/Canada market, never sold as an acc. - running lights/fog lights or similar extra lights, came over the years in many styles, but most seen are the original Hella ones for the 123GT (or attemps to impress the 123GT style)
Tach (by Smiths - never oil-pressure) was sold as an option when they appeared in the 123GT.
Yes, roof racks are rare as you mention (mostly because there where a difference in US/Canadien and European marked) - US/C-styles for the 122 wagon is normally the chromed casting type, bolted with holes drilled in the roof of the wagon, where as the european wagon one was a bolt-on-with-clamps-gripping-the-droplist - and those ones, are the ones with wooden lists and they are so nice (and in Europe they came in smaller versions for the sedans also).
Headlight visors - Never original Volvo items, but Volvo sold some Rally-protection-headlight grills. (Headlight visors are more VW)
AC units where again more a dealer installed option - and installation is quite a impact of the car.
NOS-accessories only rarely emerge! - If they do, but all sure, that you will NOT be the only one who has "found" it (if on eBay or similar) - even when parts are listed pretty miss-placed, they get found by die-hard fans out there (yes, I'm one! :-) )
Let me list some inspiration for your searches:
- propellar tunnel basket (reproduced today, but very much NOT as nice as original)
- trunk basket
- sparewheel-cover (is reproduced, but not as nice as orig.)
- back-up lights
- reclining seat brackets
- blankets and seat-covers (yes, original Volvo items are with Volvo logo weaved in)
- lockable gas cap
- gas can(s) (take good care, most listed are NOT for the 122 series, but are younger items for the 140 series etc.)
- make-up mirror with temp.meter for the sunvisor at pass. side
- different kinds of mirrors (actually Volvo made some extremely nice ones in early 122 days for mounting on door-frame - a bit like "hot-rod" style mirrors, extremely rare!)
- beauty wheel rings (many styles)
- warning light blinker
Need some more rare-rare-rare ones?:
- snow chains
- camping table with 4 'chairs'
- door-table (for mounting in the window frame when at burger-bar/drive inn)
- back-rest pillow for the front seats
- fish-tail pipe for the exhaust
- and dog/packet-guard for the wagon (to mount in between backseat and roof to protect goods from 'flying' into the passenger cabine)
- oh, and the so-ever-sweet little trailer-hitch guard..
Take good care out there - many people list items like gearknobs or other items that Volvo never bothered to carry, -as being original - they are NOT! - an easy rule is: Volvo only sold accessories that IMPROVED/ADDED to the USE of your Volvo - if you get my point.... (An original gearknob in a 122 is beautyfull, functional and fullfill every design and purpose - WHY change it with a walnut one with a lame Volvo logo-copy in plastic? Sorry!)
Well.. If you ever become die-hard enough, feel free to email me if you REALLY want some items like the above mentioned (not that I have them lying arround, but I'm in Denmark, next to Sweden) - but again, you better face, that even here, where there should be lots of it, prices get just as rare as the items!
(Watching eBay/US markets, I have found that very delicate items in Europe reaches prices higher than what you are used to pay for parts-cars or even drivable Volvo's etc. - last year, an absolutely NOS, perfect in box, original Volvo labelled gas cap for the 122 wagon (and it IS extremely rare for the wagon) reached more (on 3rd digit) than $200 - I wont say how much more, 'cause I was the die hard fan..)
