Fuel pump dilemma 900 1993

my stalled while driving and would not restart. i noticed the absense of the audible noise i usually hear from the in-tank pump prior to start up. anyway, i had car towed to the local mechanic who had "one of his guys" replace the fuel pump. well, when i went to pick it up, it would not start and the fuel gauge was on empty; i know i had a half tank.

so, i went back inside, told my story and how i though it was odd that the gauge read "empty." they came out with a gas can and poured about a gallon in the tank. the car then started. i drove to the gas station where my suspicion was confirmed, the car only took nine gallons and now that the tank is full, the gauge only reads half full.

is it possible the fuel pump/sending unit assembly was not properly reinstalled? perhaps not lined up correctly and the float is giving an improper reading? help!!!!!

thanks in advance to all
