SU Mixture Setting 120-130

I've been working my way through the Haynes and SU tuning books to figure out my fuel leak problem, and I discovered that I've not been setting my mixture up using the correct procedure. Upon reading the manual (always the last step) I discovered that there is a piston lifting rod to help with this procedure. The only problem is neither of my piston lifting rods moves! Can I just pull the air filters and lift the piston a little? Should I try to free the lifting pin?
