Charging problems 200 1986

This is a continuing problem. Replaced positive cable. Cleaned contacts. Replaced alt. with one from an 83. Put in new brushes. New battery. There is good voltage getting to the small alternator terminal. The battery light still comes on very faintly. It seems to get brighter at high RPMs. When you remove the negative cable it continues to run. Yet once again the battery went flat. Is an 83 alternator strong enough for an 86?
