Stripped axle stem thread 120-130

I have had a weird sound from the rear end for a while now. It lessens when I apply the brakes so I thought something was loose in one of the rear drums. I don't have a puller so I took it to a wheel place and they saw everything was in order as far as the drums were concerned. The bearings also seemed good.

But the threads on the axle stem were kind of stripped so it couldn't tighten it down all the way. They suspect that's what makes the noise. The cotter pin holds it so it won't come off and they said it wouldn't be especially dangerous.

Does this seem right to you Volvo veterans? If so, how do I remedy this? Would I have to exchange a whole axle or is there a way to re-thread an axle stem? Or should i just live with the noise?

I appreciate your help on these matters.
