M41 or M410??? 1800

Greetings all,

I am currently in the final stages of a auto to manual conversion on our '73 ES. The transmission purchased for the conversion came with the engine out of the Ida constructed 1800 custom which is a '70 or '71.

The '73 engine was cleaned up and painted, new front /rear seals, new IPD oil pump, etc. and with a new clutch was bolted together with the transmission and installed into the car.

Some time ago, during the "part collection" phase, a drive shaft was purchased for the conversion. After getting everythign mounted, I discover the driveshaft won't fit. The length is fine and it bolts up to the transmission fine, but the flange to connect ot the differential is too large. Also, the clearance between the shaft and the bottom of the tunnel is pretty tight. Say 1/2" or so.

We consult with a local Volvo guru and he said we have a heavier-duty m410 transmission meant for the 130hp engine. He says if we use a std '73 drive shaft, we might be able to swap the output flange from the Automatic onto the O/D. Well, that didn't work. Flange input seal and splines are different.

Right now, I see we have a few options:

1) take the '73 and '71 driveshafts to my local driveshaft shop and have them weld the '71 yoke onto the '73 shaft. A benefit of this would it would also give me additional tunnel clearance.

2) look into replacing the input flange from the '73 axle with one from a '71. Of course, this depends on the input splines being the same. A down-side to this is I'm back to that tight tunnel clearance (although I plan to see what I can do to reduce this).

3) replace the entire '73 axle with one from a '71 (I'd rather not do this...)

4) replace the '71 trans/OD with one from a '73 (also not preferred).

I sooo close to having this project done...

Ideas? Comments? Words of encouragement?
