The other third brake light - does it work? 200

I've noticed that on my 92 240, on the lower level of the rear lights, there is a hole for a light. There aren't any notches, but it looks to me like the pcb layout powers to that area.

According to my 92 user manual, that lower/middle section is a "reflector", while the Bentley indicates that there is a bulb in there (section 350-3)...

I'm guessing the hole must be a hold-over from an earlier iteration of the 240? If so, is there a reason they stopped using that section?

Can I notch out the plastic, and use a bulb holder+bulb (5WBA15S according to Bentley) in that section?

Best,

Lanval
