my engine stinks!! 200 1986

I used that orange citrus engine cleaner/degreaser to clean the engine and now a strong, horrible orangey scent lingers around the engine particularly when hot. Of course this scent gets into the passenger compartment and is making me sick. I've rinsed it with the garden hose numerous times, cleaned it with a simple green degreaser (it smelled soapy for a while but the citrus came roaring back) and even hit it with some higher pressure at the car wash. I'm a little leary of putting much water pressure to it, for fear that I might initiate wiring harness trouble.

Basically I need a better method to thoroughly clean my engine compartment without jeopardizing the wiring harness. I've heard steam cleaning mentioned, but where do I come up with a steam cleaner? What other options are there? How careful must I be when putting coldish water on my warm/hot engine? Thanks for any advice you can provide.
