Not a TOTAL LOSS

I'm going to be junking my 87 240 pretty soon I think... too bad you are not closer to New England. Lots of good seats here, with lousy sheet metal.

Mine has pretty bad right rocker panel rust and has needed a clutch for a while now... it's driven every day but I can make it slip at about 2000 rpm. My seats however are mint. Well, nice anyway, nicer than they ought to be at 250K.

I just found a solid 88 sedan to replace it, also a 5-speed. Same blue cloth interior as yours and mine.

Nice score by the way on the 940 wheels. Looking for a set of those myself.

And as for the exhaust, the kits are made both ways. The one FCP sells, the Starla (or Walker, they merged companies or something) goes under the axle. All later 240s came with the exhaust under the axle. However the earlier style exhaust still works, and some shops bend up pipes to the older patterns, so sometimes you will see the over-axle style. Both work fine when installed correctly.

I've found that EVERY ONE of the under axle exhausts WILL fail at the right rear corner with normal use. The pipe rusts here and breaks the pipe or breaks the muffler. It's the first thing to go. Front mufflers last a while longer it seems. I think it's got a lot to do with condensation in the exhaust system.
