85 740 starts but then dies after 5 to 10 seconds 700 1985

I have a 85 740 non turbo and yesterday while driveing it died and would not crank up, the starter is turning. after haveing it towed home. I tried to crank it and after the 3rd try it firewd up but, then died after 5 to 10 seconds. It is turning over and seems to want to crank but, it is not fireing up. What could this be?
