fuel guage not reading accurately 700 1985

Folks


I have been having a fuel guage issue lately.

I'm hoping it's something simple.

Guage started by reading accurately when first started then no hgher then half way even when full. I've had the "smack the dashboard to get it to read" for years but then it read accurately once connected.

getting tough to estimate remaining fuel since almost always low or on red block.

anyone experience this or have a troubleshooting process.
