960 transmission

Hi,
I bought a 960 this week with transmission problems. The previous owner described the classic symptoms of a bad PNP switch -- flashing lights; 3rd gear only. I found two I haven't seen before with this problem. No. 1, it won't move in any of the forward gears, although reverse works fine. No. 2, it has this buzz emanating from under the tranny hump. It sounds more electrical than mechanical.
I am trying to decide if the previous owner fried the transmission by driving in 3rd. The fluid smells burnt, but only slightly so, and it is the right color. What do you think? Cross my fingers and buy a new switch?
Thanks,
Todd
