auxilliary heat guages? 120-130

I was just reading something which was reinforcing how important heat management is to the long life of an engine. I've always thought that the 122 stock guage was a little basic (mine always just goes way up to the right), so I was daydreaming this evening about a possible aux-guage I could install that would give a more accurate reading of engine temp. Is there something that could be attached to the block or head that would give a good read-out that any of you know of? I've heard of lazer guages that you just point at any spot that you want.. but I don't quite think that would work. Pieziolectric perhaps?
