M41 making noises! 1800 1972

Hey, the m41 on my 1800E has recently started making strange noises and I'm not sure if I'm looking at a rebuild. In second gear it makes a growling noise that I can only describe as sounding like a chunk of wood being allowed to drag over a large tothed turning gear. In fourth gear it makes a ticking noise that is simaler to valve rocker noise. All other gears sound fine. The noises are affected by the speed of the car but not the speed of the engine. They are unaffected by the clutch. Also they almost go away if I press the shifter lightly in the direction to take it out of gear. Internal problems, or should I look for some sort of loose linkage or somthing? Sometimes, but rarely these gears will operate without noise.

Thank you for any advice.
