Late model A/C not working 200 1992

When I bought my '92 wagon last year the A/C wasn't working. The previous owner just said it hadn't worked for a while, and didn't now why. For me (and apparently the p.o. as well), as I live in Canada it's not a priority, and the absence of rust was, so I still got the car. I would like to get the A/C working though at some point, and I'm just wondering if there are a few simple things I can check to get it working. It's still the old R12 type, and the p.o. was eventually planning on converting to R134 so he threw in a few parts but nothing substantial. I'm just wondering if there are any common minor problems that can be eliminated as the cause of the A/C not working, as it would be "cool" to get it working in the short term as I prepare (i.e. save money) for the conversion later on. By the way, what parts will I need for the conversion? I've heard of conversion kits, does anyone recommend any particular kit? Will a kit comprise everything required? Thanks!
