Third Brake Light Works, But That's It. 200 1988

Hi- I have owned my '88 240 for about six months, all of a sudden (this morning), the brake lights in the tail light housings quit working, but my third (high mount) brake light still works. Things of note: I have had no trouble with any of the lights, turn signals, etc. until this morning, although when I turn the switch on, the bulb failure warning lamp doesn't test itself. After purchasing the car, while cleaning the trunk, I discovered that some previous owner had connected a long length of wire from one brake light socket to the other- thought this looked fishy? I took the tail light assemblies out of the vehicle and cleaned all contact points, pulled up on the "ears" of the sockets to ensure a tight fit. I also took the wiring harness plug loose from the tail light circuit board and sprayed it out with electrical contact cleaner. Checked all bulb filaments, and they all looked okay. My left tail light lens is cracked, had some water standing in it, and the gasket is poor. The circuit board looked a little singed where the harness plugs in. I also installed a new fuse corresponding to the brake lights, and cleaned the ground contact points. Still no brake lights except the high mount one. Any tips for an electrically challenged person before I take the car to a repairman? Thanks in advance- Brett
