The other third brake light - does it work? 200

I've been doing work on the rear lights on our '90 244.
Right side assembly has a notched hole, left side has a plain small hole without notches. Don't know if either or both is/are original. A friend's '89 244 also has notched and unnotched holes.

Anyway, after some thought I realized that any added bulb(s) would add to the amperage running through the existing wires. Since any added bulb would likely be a 21-watt bulb instead of a low-power taillight bulb, this would be an overheating concern.

Further, if you add wattage to brake lights or taillights - which is monitored by the beloved bulb failure warning relay (aka BFWR) there's a good chance you'll overheat the BFWR internally and have to replace it.

If you really want to add bulbs there, I think you could do it using relays and a separate power lead to the rear. Relay could be at either front or rear. However at sounds like a lot of work for minimal gain. Maybe useful if you drive in an area with some unusual need for additional rear lighting.
