'87 740T, Auto Shift Lever problem 700

posted by  someone claiming to be Faust, forgot my password on  Thu Apr 20 13:11 CST 2006 [RELATED]

I'm looking at an '87 740 turbo wagon with an auto trans and 150K miles.
The shift lever moves feely through P-R-N, but will not move into drive. the seller, a third party who has no history of the car, suggests this is linkage problem. Could be, but I suspect an internal problem. Has anyone else encountered this?
