The last few weeks, my CR-915 stereo has begun to present the very familiar FM reception problem. My initial experience with this headache was on my 86 745 GLE and it was very annoying depite the sound system being pretty kick-butt (when it worked). Seems the problem continues on the later stereos as well. From what I've read in the FAQ, FM reception issues are fairly common and the fix involves sodering far beyond my own meager skills.
My 67 Amazon wagon had a very nice Kenwood CD stereo with detachable faceplate and since I drive the 940 daily and the Amazon rarely... I've opted to switch the CD stereo into the 940. I've already ordered the wiring harness kit from Crutchfield along with wiring instructions so I'm good there.
My main concern is making the stereo look nice in the opening. I looked at the crutchfield mounting kit and it does not appear to conform to the positive slope of the console. So I passed on that. I've got a spare bezel from my original 740 system, and I figure I could cut the center out of it and mate it to the Kenwood - though it will require some quality time with the dremmel tool. An alternative presented itself when I was pulling the CR-915. I noticed that unlike previous single-piece bezels, the CR-915 seems to be a snap-in face that looks as if it would acomodate the CD player. I didn't want to mess with it too much as the harness kit is still a few days away and limited FM is better than NO music at all. I slide the CR-915 back in place and will be sitting on my hands for a couple of days.
So, does anyone know about this modular face on the CR-915?
Does anyone know where I can order a volvo-proper mounting kit?
Anything special I know know about this conversion in general?
