car stumbles then dies at start 200 1991

Last week my 91 240 suddenly developed a problem where it would stumble and die when it was started. It had all the signs of classic alternator failure (gauges stopped working before car died, radio turned off, etc) so I had my mechanic replace the alternator brushes. The car seemed fine for a few days, but now it is again stumbling and then will die when started. It will start fine, then run for maybe 3-5 seconds before it will completly die. If I give it a lot of gas, I can manage to keep it running at start, and it seems to run better at higher RPM's. This afternoon, I did this and kept it reving for a full 5 minutes, after which I let it settle back down to normal idle speed, and it seemed to be running okay. (at normal idle and running smoothly).

I went for a 15-20 minute drive, and the car ran pretty well, although it would still hesitate or stumble a little bit when I gave it gas from a stop. Also, the check engine light is now on. Does this sound like an electrical/alternator problem or could this possibly be another issue unrelated to the alternator? I really need this car to be running right and will appreciate any insight on this problem. TIA.
