ambient temperature display lamp always on 900

Hi all, I just changed the bulb (element) in the dash display. I ordered the lamp at the dealer figuring it would already be mounted in the plastic holder. The lamp arrived 'loose' and I struggled with it but got the contacts on the new lamp to crimp onto the metal contacts on the holder after I wrestled out the old lamp. I could have ordered a loose bulb almost anywhere, and not for four bucks.

Here is my question, and feel free to comment on the above if there was a better way to do that.

The lamp behind the LCD is always on, as long as the ignition is on. It turns on with the headlights or the parking light position. When the car is on, the lamp is on. During the day (when the headlights are off) the lamp behind the LCD is on.

Is this the way it was before? I can't remember if it was always this way.

BTW taking out the cluster is not a big deal.
