BW 35 Trannies all bad? 140-160

I've got a 1972 142 that I converted to a manual. It originally had a bw35 that was nothing but trouble. A small spring that looked like a bent paper clip kept breaking and the transmission kept popping out of gear. After having to have it repaired twice is when I finnally put in the manual. My question is about the bw35 tranny. Is it a bad tranny? did they all have that problem? The mechanic that I took it to for the repairs at the time said that he would have warned me about buying that tranny. I want to get my girlfriend (basicly my wife after 9 years) another older volvo but she cannot drive a manual and will not be able to learn. If anyone has any info it would be appreciated.
