Rear clunk turns out to be the tailpipe hitting underside of rear axle. How to remedy? 200

After replacing about every suspension part that can be replaced in an attempt to silence the rear clunks, with very little improvement, I finally confirmed today that the clunk is originating from the between-mufflers tailpipe. When the rear axle moves up and down unevenly, it actually clanks against the tailpipe directly beneath it. When doing a front end alignment today with car on lift, we discovered it. The source of this mysterious rear end clunk had eluded me for several years!! The pipe hangers seem to be fine, so no problems are apparent with the pipe location. My question to forum members who may have experienced the same problem: what did you do to remedy this? It kind of looks like I may have to cut a piece of the pipe out (that which sits directly beneath the axle) and replace it with a new chunk that has more clearance beneath the axle. OR....maybe I should install a rubber snubber of sorts to the bottom side of the axle to absorb the clunk sound when the pipe hits the axle?? What do you guys recommend? Thank you mucho! Daryl
