760 guru's! Which is best 38 or 40 mm caliper?? 700

Could some of the real brake guru's give me a hint here. I am about to replace both rear calipers on my 88 760 T-Wagon with rebuilds. I suspect they are 40 mm but I have heard you can use 38mm if you replace both.

My question...why do they have 2 so close in size? What advantage could the 2 mm be? Is the 40 a better unit for balanced braking on my wagon or will the 38's do the same job? Are the calipers the same except for piston diameter?

38 are somewhat chaeper at O'Rielly's.

Thanks fella's,

Bill 88 760 Wagon, 101K, 89 240 DL, 144K
